Welcome to MurrayBramwell.com

I have been a theatre and music reviewer in Adelaide, South Australia since 1985. Over that time I have written for numerous Australian publications including The National Times, CentreStage, Lowdown, 24 Hours, Vogue, Theatre Australia , The Advertiser and The Australian Financial Review.

I contributed regularly to The Adelaide Review from 1985 until 2010 and for The Australian since 1990 . Other websites and publications I have recently written for include New Zealand Aotearoa Books, The Barefoot Review, Daily Review, Limelight, and InReview (InDaily)

This site is an archive of my writings for these publications.

Biography

Murray Bramwell

Born in 1949 in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Educated at Hokowhitu Primary and Palmerston North Boys’ High.
Graduated MA Honours in English from Massey University, Palmerston North in 1970. Taught for one year in the English Department at Massey.

In 1972 took up a postgraduate scholarship to Flinders University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia. Taught part-time in English (and later in Drama) at Flinders University, Adelaide University, and Sturt College of Advanced Education from 1972 – 1988.
Worked as Welfare Officer for the Flinders University Union from 1978 – 1988.
Appointed to a full-time Lectureship in Drama at Flinders in 1989.
Promoted to Associate Professor in 2006.
Retired from teaching in March 2011.

Began reviewing theatre regularly for The National Times in 1985. Also The Adelaide Review (1985-2010) and The Advertiser (1986-7). First contributed to The Australian in 1990, then continuously from 1991. Contributed also to CentreStage, The Australian Financial Review, Lowdown, New Theatre Australia, Theatre Australasia, 24 Hours, Australian Listener, The Sydney Review, Harper’s, Island, Meanjin, Editions, The New Zealand Listener, New Zealand Aotearoa Books, The Sondheim Review and others.

Three adult children – Charity and Toby Bramwell, from his first marriage, and stepson James Begley. Has lived with his partner, the lovely Ruth Eckert, since 1989.
